Exclusive Interview with Jeff Deist, Chief of Staff For Congressman Ron Paul

A few days ago I was lucky enough to share a phone call with Jeff Deist, Chief of Staff for Congressman Ron Paul. We recorded a fantastic interview, and I was able to ask Jeff his thoughts on how the U.S. government is expanding legislative powers, why the American public is finally getting behind Ron Paul’s message, and how largely unaware most Americans are when it comes to the realities of the political process.
When asked why Ron Paul has become such a hit with Americans recently, Jeff said, “Well I think a lot of things have happened, first of all is that we’ve seen the deterioration of the economy over the last four years, the deterioration of the US dollar, we’ve seen increased amounts of Fed bailouts and Fed monetization of debt. We’ve seen the sovereign debt crisis in Europe…and we’ve also seen further futility in our war
s in Afghanistan and Iraq. So I think you put all this together and people are starting to say, ‘Hey, a lot of the things Ron Paul has been saying, really for decades–but especially since 08′–have been proven correct’”.
With respect to what drives politicians these days to make specific voting decisions, Jeff commented, “At the end of the day more than anything, they respond to the possibility of not being reelected. That’s the single biggest driver of most people who want to have a political career, because otherwise your political career ends. So if they get enough feeling from folks in their district [that a vote] is deeply unpopular back home they will respond to that.”
When asked about “special interests” that affect voting and decision-making by lawmakers, and if those special interests ever target Ron Paul, Jeff said, “Well it’s funny Ron doesn’t feel any [special interest pressure], because lobbyists and special interests have long since left him alone…His voting record is such that they kind of know how he’s going to vote on something and they don’t feel like it’s worth their time. Early on in his congressional career he was lobbied just like anyone else…really the way that a lot of pressure[by special interests] is exerted is not so much on the members, but it’s felt through leadership of the two parties. In other words, the party leaders have an agenda and that may be driven by whatever special
interest, it may be driven by donor money…they will make that pressure very much felt on a rank and file member of congress. A very good example is the Medicare Part D prescription drug vote…that was a vote they held open until 5 o’ clock in the morning, and the majority whip of the house was literally going around threatening members…this has been the nature of politics since politics existed, but it’s quite shocking how Americans remain wildly naive in many ways about the process.”
This was a fascinating “must-listen” interview on Ron Paul and American politics, and is required listening for all students of American history and investors worldwide.
